Hello Earl: What do you mean by the statement, "Jerry sure left a helluva mess?" Thank you, - AshesRising

Ashes: Jerry's death obviously left a hole in the democratic management of the GD enterprise. Not only that but forced the uncomforatble issue of dealing with Deborah Koons as the heir to Jerry's estate. The litigation with Mountain Girl forced the surviving members and families to take sides. The bickering in the band, the management issues, residuals etc etc etc - even the issues surrounding the boards - all not an issue should Jerry have lived on.

gotta agree with you there - once jerry passed the whole "scene" became like a fractal forming on a computer screen with sides scattering all over. whether jerry thought so or not, he was the gravitational force holding the whole gd enterprise together - maybe not through hands on management, but through his iconic stature (which i know he was not comfortable with). once he passed, it was like the big bang - lots of energy heading out in all different and disparate directions.

Earl: Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate the value you add to this forum even when I disagree with your opinions(as I do here), but it's good to see how many people in this dwindling community still care about the shared experiences to take the time to think about this stuff and comment. Be well, - AshesRising

Ashes: Although I'm sure Garcia had no intention of causing or contributing to the ensuing chaos following his death, the fact that it occured is well documented as fact, rather than my opinion. The trial involving his estate is a matter of public record and sets the stage for the hurt feelings and adversarial conditions that followed. Many have voiced opinions regarding Deborah Koons, and though she may not be getting a fair shake, the fact is that she now has at least partial ownership of the Garcia/Hunter catalog and the resulting Grateful Dead work product. The recent Rhino deal arose from the difficulties in managing the Grateful Dead product and the hard feelings that came from the disagreements that ensued. Both Hart and Weir have made statements hoping for an end of the bickering - and renewing their friendships within the band.

(same middle initial also)eh? oh well...It wern't sarcasm of your post, I do find them very insightful- a small theory of mine is that all the Dead get along quite well, they're just having fun with us "serious" fans. Bobby: "Hey Phil, did you here the latest theory about us-ha-ha!"
Now (after several deep breath's) here's my latest...i think a member of The Dead has been posting here -how 'bout that?
what an imagination i have!

Charlie: No relation..just an obscure alias I use for internet and musical purposes. There was also the pianist Earl Bud Powell....good buddy of Art Tatum's (who was a musical hero of Jerry's)...thus the AKA.

Somebody been Googling me?

Anyway, Me Bad. I mentioned earlier in this thread that Deborah Koons has an ownership stake in the Dead as heir to Garcia's estate. After some research, I found that the Grateful Dead articles of incorporation stated that the shares held by a band member would revert back to the remaining members of the band should a band member die ...so I'm wrong. However, she probably derives some income from the Garcia/Hunter publishing rights and has a 33% stake in the Jerry Garcia LLC as an extension of Garcia's will.

Rhino's revenue sights are strictly aimed at the video/film vault of the GD. It is extensive and historic.
Any audio sales will be gravy for THAT huge plate of meat and potatoes.
Mark these words.
